it’s so sad to see long running sci-fi franchises like star trek and star wars collapsing under the weight of their own nostalgia
i don’t care if the hero of your new series is related to a legacy character! that shouldn’t be why i care about them either! imo it’s a major symptom of the commodification of art, where studios are terrified to branch out from a tried and true formula and do something new because art isn’t about telling stories or evoking feelings it’s about making money. like yeah having spock or obiwan kenobi there gets people’s butts in the seats but are you actually telling a new story or just using that pre-existing emotional connection to get the audience to care about your story instead of putting in the effort to build a new one?
