I get the rampant popularity of that is the ‘post-canon Cardassia’ sub-genre of Garak/Bashir fic, but I was thinking about it and was wondering - are there any post-canon fics where they meet up on Earth?
Indeed, this plot setting is very rare indeed and I would love to see some of it, particularly something lengthy. Most of the pieces I’ve found have been short or have been confined largely to a shared home, not really getting into future Earth society or culture. Will I have to write the fic myself?
Why would Garak leave Cardassia to go to Earth though? He’s wanted to go home for a long time. I know some thing have him as Castellon (I think I always spell that word wrong) or Ambassador. I don’t really buy that Garak would ever want to be Castellon though. Ambassador… maybe, but I still don’t know. So… for what in-character reason would Garak be spending an extended period time on Earth post-series? I am curious.
I mean in the novels its established Garak has an office in Paris.
But… why? Garak loves Cardassia. That makes no sense to me at all. Who wrote that novel?
I have a hard time picturing Julian settling down on Earth, also. His augment status alone would make that difficult for him.
Plus in the books Julian was eventually exiled from the Federation. (Breaking Federation rules to do help the Andorians if I remember.) A happy ending for the two of them seems more likely on Cardassia.
Besides, I never got the feeling that Julian planned on returning to Earth long term.
But a good fic can explore almost any possibility.
@sandssavvy that is a good point too about Julian and actually @ladyvean and I were just talking about that too! I don’t think either of them would really go to Earth. Interesting discussion though.

I think it was AuroraNova who came up with anshwar, resting foreheads together as a Cardassian gesture of intimacy. At least, I first encountered it in their post-canon fic and I loved it.
Bashir’s scarf is both a concession to the fact that post-Dominion-bombardment Cardassia is a giant dustbowl, and to modesty, since the lack of neckridges makes his outfits somewhat scandalously revealing (fancanon that Julian’s collarbones are the single greatest threat to Cardassian political stability is courtesy of thehoyden’s Letters from the Northern Continent)
