Yes he did. Nomad, the box on a string in the third gif, is wiping Uhura’s mind and Scotty runs to her defence and gets zapped for his effort. His stunt double does an awesome flip over the railing and he is declared dead, by Bones of course. Nomad makes him better later, but the point still stands that he died trying to defend her.
So anyone who says the Scotty/Uhura relationship comes out of nowhere in Star Trek V can bite me.
slight au where the first time scotty saw uhura he just stared at her with his mouth open and jim comes by and gently shuts his mouth and steers him into the turbolift while scotty keeps staring
once she’s out of sight scotty’s like “SIR YOU DIDN’T TELL ME WE HAD A GODDESS SERVING ON THIS SHIP”
uhura can hear him (everyone on the bridge can hear him) and laughs about it to herself
a couple days later he winds up in the same lift as her and he stares at the floor almost the whole time but then he blurts out, “Sorry ‘bout the other day my brain just short-circuited because you’re so beautiful and-“
he looks up and notices that the lift had already stopped and she’d exited and now there’s spock standing in the doorway staring blankly at him and he’s like “Thank you…???????” with this ‘humans are so weird’ look on his face.
scotty’s just like fml and proceeds to explain to spock that, while he is very attractive, he actually meant to direct that comment at uhura and spock’s like “ah” and they proceed to stand there awkwardly for like 20 minutes
one time he’s walking by the rec rooms and hears the most beautiful voice he’s ever heard. so he peeks in to discover the source (he figures someone is playing a holo or something) and he sees that its coming from uhura. he just turns and grabs the first person walking by- some poor little ensign- and shakes them, yelling “SHE CAN SING TOO???? WHY IS SHE SO PERFECT?!?!?!?!”
“i don’t know?????? sir?????” the ensign responds and scotty lets them go and stalks off, his whole universe turned upside down… again.
scotty is hanging out (read: drinking) with mccoy and chekov one night and after a couple glasses of vodka he groans and drops his head to the table.
“i think your vodka killed him, kid” bones says and chekov acts offended because “WODKA COULD NEVER KILL SOMEONE HDU”
but then scotty groans again and starts telling them about how he’s pretty much in love with uhura even though he can’t seem to hold a conversation with her.
and bones is like “just take a shot of liquid courage and ask her out!!!!”
and scotty is all “but she’s so perfect and i’m… i’m a poTATO”
and chekov pats his shoulder sympathetically “but you are a wery cute potato.”
and scotty’s all “…thanks????”
scotty sees uhura in the mess hall sitting by herself and uses all of his will power to sit with her. she smiles at him and is like, “i don’t believe we’ve properly met? i’m lieutenant uhura.”
and scotty opens his mouth and squeaks. like literally squeaks. he blushes and clears his throat and tries again and he blurts out, “weshouldgetmarried”
and uhura’s like “…wut”
and scotty excuses himself and goes to hide in engineering for the rest of the day
one day he’s on the bridge as acting captain while kirk and spock are on-planet doing something. at some point he makes a really, really, really bad, groan-inducing pun and after a moment of silence uhura bursts out laughing at her station. like full-on crying from laughing so hard.
scotty adds ‘she has an a sense of humor’ and ‘omg her smile and laugh are so beautiful too it isn’t fair’ to his list of things he loves about her.
there’s a day where scotty is in the transporter room by himself, just doing minor repairs on some of the equipment, and talking to the ship about how lovely uhura is (“i mean she’s the only lady i really look at besides you”). he talks to the ship a lot, usually about his day or what he plans on doing, but he does sometimes start gushing about his other favorite lady.
he doesn’t realize, however, that this time someone is listening in on him. uhura had been walking by and, really, really, hadn’t meant to stop and listen but she had heard that scottish brogue she enjoyed listening to and, well…
she bites her lip, thinks about walking in and talking to him. she decides to walk away instead. eavesdropping is rude, even if she liked what she was hearing.
