the other day I was thinking happy thoughts about Scotty and Uhura after the movies’ timeline, and then it got stuck in my head: what if they got together earlier, and had a son, and then this son joined the Academy? I just…. (o´ω`o) had to draw it
“He’s going into communications.”
“No, he’ll be going into engineering.”
“He’ll be in communications.”
“No, engineering.”
“Nonsense; it would be a travesty to let these superior linguistic skills go to waste!”
“Aye, but it would be far worse to keep such a capable young lad away from his rightful place in the heart of a starship!”
“Uh… mom? Dad? I… uh… I actually want to be a botanist.”

“And what was that one?” Scotty asks, having to take the spanner out of his mouth so he was speaking clearly.
“Orion. A greeting for Elders,” Uhura explains before moving onto her next phrase. This was their thing now. Uhura would come down to engineering and go over any and every language of the Federation while Scotty worked on the engines, or fixed up broken replicators, or even just tinkered with spare parts. Uhura found it better than practicing alone, and Monty always assured her that he enjoyed her company, even though he didn’t always understand what she was saying.
Sometimes, Uhura used this to her advantage.
“When you’re inventing your eyes are so bright, like the stars.”
He looks up from his task, silently asking her which language it was.
“You have something on your face,” she tells him, amused. “Those were both in Andorian.”
“Ah,” he says, nodding sagely. She giggles, knowing he still did not understand any of it. Scotty gazes at her fondly, he had been smitten with the sound of her laughter from the beginning and was always happy when he was the cause of it. “You have no idea how much I love you,” he murmurs.
Uhura’s laughter is cut short as for a second she thinks she has been caught out, that he had known about all the things she said to him during these times. But that was not it. It was Monty simply not knowing that she had been secretly learning Scottish Gaelic for him. With a slow smile, she responds in the same language.
“I think I do.”

Sometimes he’ll just talk the whole shift away and not eat his lunch at all. It’s kind of endearing.

spocksbedsidemanner suggested I do a picture of Uhura going down to Engineering to have a chat with Scotty and while they’re talking he gets the monitor to light up in the shape of a heart.
