Let me tell you a bit about why I love Christine Chapel.

Christine Chapel was head nurse under Dr. McCoy on the Enterprise.

Christine Chapel was so goddamned brave, she left her career in bio-research (she was fucking smart, okay?) to sign up for Star Fleet as a nurse. She left her career to sign up to travel around the outermost reaches of human exploration, where death and danger were commonplace. She chose to put herself in that death and danger, and to defy it every day as a medical professional. Christine Chapel was brave.

She was romantic. She left that steady career because her fiance had gone missing in space, and she hoped one day they’d find each other out there. Christine dared to go out on a limb for love, and when that love was betrayed and lost, she dared to love again. She dared to fall in love with someone who she had no reason to believe returned her feelings, and who didn’t. Christine dared to love, even when it hurt. She was a romantic.

Christine was tough. You better believe that woman’s tough when every other time the Enterprise gets into a spat, the CMO’s off on the bridge babysitting (yelling at) the Captain and XO. No big deal, we’re just in combat, the ship’s shaking like it’s in a blender, casualties are coming in and whoops, where’s the CMO? You’ll never convince me that it wasn’t the strength of Dr. M’Benga and Christine that held the Med Bay together with the CMO so often AWOL. She barely blinked an eye under the regular Enterprise medical weirdness including stolen brains, rapid aging, and deadly alien mystery bugs, and most often assisted with the development of the cures. Christine was tough.

Christine was caring. She was the first to realize while caring for the children of the Starnes Exploration Party that they weren’t upset about losing their parents and guardians. She helped her dear friend Uhura re-educate herself after Nomad stole Uhura’s memories. She dared to look deeper into what it must like to be Spock, tried to understand him on his own terms. With her background, she probably had more options in Starfleet, but she chose nursing over research. She chose to heal. Christine was caring.

Christine Chapel was brave, and smart, and tough, and caring.

I love Christine because if a writer decided to get a foothold on any one of these qualities, Christine wouldn’t be the shallow, uninteresting, squishy character that people assume she is. If writers bothered to put a drop of effort into her at all, Christine would be solid. Christine would command as much attention as the bridge crew. Talk about untapped potential. Christine fucking Chapel.
