Khan!

Everyone gets so uptight about Star Trek and Khan and representation and the fact that a character named Khan Noonien Singh is canonically of Southern Indian descent but is played in a movie by a white guy. Despite the fact that neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Ricardo Montalbán are Indian.

In fact, both are of European descent. Europe, where no one even considers Spanish people to be PoC. But somehow Cumberbatch is terrible and wrong and Montalbán is perfectly ok. Seems pretty weird to me. Surely, if we’re going to talk about representation, then both actors are just as incorrect as each other. Just saying.

exaaaactly. Montalbán was also an incorrect casting choice, but you don’t fix a wrong with an even bigger wrong. JJ should have been smarter. Or if he wanted to cast Benny so god damn bad he could have chosen a different character to play his super-villain role. Star Trek is beautiful and I love it and it’s super awesome but it also trips over its own feet and thinks itself as the most progressive show of all the time when in reality it can just come off as strained or ill-advised.

okay thank you tho? i'm tired of ppl acting like tos deserves accolades for basically going 'all brown ppl look the same no one will know the difference' like - points for making the character a poc even if the actor was a mexican with a LOT of spanish blood but it wasn't exactly progressive although i did see a post by a person who was south asian and he was like 'thanks for not casting ANOTHER person who looks like me as a terrorist' so... maybe i dunno... jj should have just DONE AN ORIGINAL PLOT
