A Selfie Together
“Okay, say ‘Cheese!’, dear.”
Holding up the phone, Ben fit them into frame and smiled, trying to make the picture look as endearing as possible. There were hairs tickling his cheek — and basically the entire left side of his face — but he forced himself to keep it together. He’d been doing this for almost half an hour now and there wasn’t a single photo were he didn’t look weirdly uncomfortable.
Ben took a deep breath and angled his head away and took the photo.
…Only to find that it looked nowhere near as nice as he had hoped.
“We’ll have to take another one,” Ben sighed, getting back in position to give it another shot. Selfies weren’t really his thing but it was for a good cause. He flinched when he felt a hairy finger get a little too close to his ear canal.
“Stop that!”
The pink plant extended its fingers in response to Ben’s sharp reaction and gave a shrill shriek, causing Ben to take a step back and soothingly raise his hands. Hikaru had asked him to take care of Gertrude while he was away and even though he tried his best to get along with his husband’s leafy companion, they just didn’t click.
It took the plant a few seconds to calm down and curl its fingery appentages back into a loose fist.
“Listen, we’ve talked about this. No touching.” He wagged his finger at the plant, visibly running out of ideas on how to deal with its whims. Getrude answered with a hiss and ruffled its leafs.
Ben hissed back and sat down on the nearest chair, opening the photo gallery on his phone. He flicked through the few selfies he’d taken of himself and Gertrude and shook his head. Half of them were blurry and the other half showed him grimacing because Getrude had no concept of personal space.
“Ah, whatever,” Ben sighed and sent Hikaru one of the really silly looking ones, adding a desperate ‘please come back soon’.
