so i’m genuinely curious about what people think of the relationship between Gary Mitchell and Jim. do you see it as creepy/abusive lover and/or friend relationship, or is Gary a good guy who just had the misfortune of going insane?
The best piece of meta I read on them (and lord knows where it is now or when I last saw it) described Gary as a close friend Jim was crushing on but who probably didn’t return his affections – after all, he set Kirk up with a “pretty blonde” girl to distract him, when he could easily have distracted him himself if he’d been inclined – and who used Jim’s obvious crush to manipulate him. I think “godhood” only intensified the qualities he’d buried, rather than turning a genuinely good guy into a murderous and manipulative asshole.
