Jim is responsible for Spock’s first orgasm. He’s the first person ever, including even Spock himself, to gently deconstruct his mental and physical barriers and allow him to find that painfully glorious release.

Jim allows everything about Spock’s body language in those few beautiful seconds to be burned eternally into his memory. The way his lips quiver and fall open, his choked gasping, his eyes glassing over, his head tipping back to expose his throat in a gesture of submission, his full-body shudder.

Years later, when they are old and Spock is content in himself and less a being of two halves in constant turmoil, and Jim is chubbier and just as much of a tease, Jim will wake Spock in the morning and torment him.

I don’t think Kirk actually hooked up all that much, certainly not as much as pop culture collective memory would have us believe. The life of a starship captain is very high stress and super busy. In several episodes he even comments on the fact that he can’t have the luxury of a normal romance or love life because he’s so committed to his ship and his crew and all the responsibilities associated with being a captain that he has no time for anything else.

But YEAH, my headcanon is basically that Kirk and Spock didn’t figure out their shit and actually get together until near the end of the original 5 year mission – then when things got super serious Spock sorta freaked out and ran off to Vulcan to undergo the Kolinahr ritual to purge all emotion because he felt too strong of a connection with Jim and it totally scared the shit out of him. 

This is basically canon – I mean it’s literally made explicit in TMP that the one thing keeping Spock from finally achieving Kolinahr was that he couldn’t let go of his love for Jim. He can’t stop thinking about him, can’t let go of the attachment he has for him. CANON AF.

Anyway. Back to your question. I mean, really I can only draw judgement on Spock as a character and not Vulcans as an entire race, because obviously everyone is different, but yes I think it’s fair to say that at least in his particular character – he’s a total romantic sap at heart. 

I see so much of their relationship, certainly in the beginning, as likened to a courtly love type relationship – Spock as the noble knight always looking out for his monarch’s safety and happiness, putting Jim’s needs first, often putting himself in harm’s way to protect Jim, carrying himself with honor and respect for the captain he serves. 

Add in all those late night chess matches – the playing of chess has long been used in literature as a metaphor for courtship/sexual interest.

I’ve also seen them compared to the classic Greek ideal of Patroclus and Achilles – the best of friends and lovers in the time of the Iliad. The two went off to war together and when Patroclus is killed in battle, Achilles avenges him in a rage, forsaking the love of any other.

And finally you can make the comparison between The Fair Youth of Shakespeare’s sonnets ahem cough hack thing i’m writing as we speak where Spock is the poet and Jim is the Fair Youth.

Sooooo, long story short? Spock is a total sap and Jim is a big ole dork and they are super sappy romantics together.
