But why did you marry him?
Sarek: Spock. You lament?
Spock maintains silence.
Sarek: It is not logical to grieve, by virtue of your knowledge regarding Kirk’s species. As a human, death was to be expected.
Spock: Undoubtedly.
Sarek: Yet, you remain in mourning? Why?
Spock: Kirk..Jim was not a mere human.
Sarek: You were aware of his destiny
Spock: It does not change the circumstances….what is unspoken. It is a deep personal thing. Can you see that and understand?
Sarek: You allow your emotions to run deep even in solitude, it is not our way. Spock, you must choose to control —
Spock: Do you admit to not feeling anything when Mother died? Was she not human?
Sarek pauses…
Sarek: As a son, to a human and vulcan, why did you repeat my actions? Why did you marry him, knowing..
Spock: For the same reason you married mother.
Sarek nears Spock
Sarek: I still maintain remembrance of Kirk when your body was in death. His pain, was your pain, as you died, as did he. There was essence shared, Kirk found a way to bring you back to us. It was not impossible to distinguish the meaning of his efforts.
Sarek pauses momentarily - understanding.
Sarek: You would not allow him to have his end be any different, Spock
Spock arches an eyebrow
Sarek: Kirk’s death was selfless, much like your stay in Romulus. Though you are parted, your souls and endeavours are one. You cannot retrieve his soul, you may however ..continue.. as he would expect of you. With time, you will join Kirk once more.
Spock: I would not presume to test your knowledge, nor take solace in your words - as you have perished as well, but…as I am part human, as mother and Jim were fond of reminding me….I will permit myself to accept your certainty.
Spock stands and salutes, Sarek returns salute and dematerialises. Spock awakens, discern with closure.
