There is literally NO REASON AT ALL why Spock should need to stand up to use his scanner. It’s an impractical and stupid design of equipment. No one else needs to stand to use any device at their position… not even Sulu, who has a distantly similar mechanism that rises out of the console.
But jfc I’m so grateful they designed it that way. And so is Jim.
I swear the person in charge of costuming in STIII just raided the wardrobes of a couple of dime-store novel cover models.
