Spock purposely gets/stays mildly sick or injured so he'll have excuses to see Bones more often. Bones realizes this when Spock reports to sickbay THREE STARDATES IN A ROW for the common cold, a stubbed toe, and a headache. He finds Spock's newfound behavior simultaneously irritating and completely adorable, and decides that the best thing to do is invite Spock to have dinner with him just so he'll STOP FREAKIN INJURING HIMSELF!

Turns out Bones asked Spock to dinner as a pretence to lecture him on OH&S procedures. He’s still irrationally pleased when Spock comes by two days later having sprained his ankle (It’s not even swollen, Spock). The penny does eventually drop, but not until after Bones has sent Spock an absurd amount of workplace safety brochures. Instead of asking Spock out he sends him a pamphlet on the correct way to date a colleague.
