Is it just me, or did Spock look like he was on the verge of tears when he mind-melded with Picard to learn that Sarek really did love him?
Keep in mind this was shortly after Sarek’s death, and he had died with them on bad terms with each other, even though Sarek cried out for Spock in his final words. Spock knows this from Picard having just witnessed it, and he knows how Sarek feels from the mind-meld that took place when Sarek met Picard previously.
Many people also headcanon Bones as having died right before this two-parter, since Spock wouldn’t go to Romulus until he had “no one” left. He also likely wouldn’t have gone against Federation orders in the name of a cause he deeply believed in, if not for the events in Search for Spock. This entire two-parter can be paralleled quite well with that movie, because in each situation, Kirk and Spock felt they had nothing left to lose by not taking action, but everything to gain for even just the smallest chance of success that came with trying. In many ways, this is Spock’s final homage to Kirk’s unfaltering idealism and refusal to believe in no-win scenarios.
Now that Spock really DOES have no one left, getting sucked into the alternate universe in the reboot movie probably wasn’t the worst thing to happen to him. At least there, he found Kirk again.
