So Kirk gets really frustrated with trying to catalog nonfiction books about other planets and their cultures because nobody's gotten around to designing a non-Earth-centric cataloging system, so those books end up with really long call numbers. Thus, in one caffeine-fueled weekend, he designs a new system. He started trying to modify the more common systems (Dewey, Library of Congress, etc.) but eventually ends up creating a completely new system. (Part 1)

(cont) When he wakes up Monday, after his headache goes away, he takes a fresh look at his plan, and thinks he really has something here, so he starts trying to vet his plan with experts in various fields, starting with one of his friends from his undergrad years who became a doctor (Bones). Bones puts in a word with a colleague at Starfleet to see about getting some other species to come take a look, and the very first response they get is from Spock who has a day free due to a bureaucratic mix up, so he beams over out of curiosity and absolutely schools them on Vulcan culture, and after a monologue on the intricacies of Surak’s philosophies Kirk and Bones are just stare at him slack jawed for a moment and then Kirk drops to one knee and (half) jokingly asks Spock to marry him. After he explains to a very confused and startled Spock, it becomes a tradition that the three of them meet one evening a week to work on the project and once it’s done just to talk.
imagine the three of them bouncing ideas off each other long after the library closes
spock has been introduced to caffine, and judging by the way he cant seem to sit still, he loves it
bones grumbles about the lack of sleep theyve been getting, but its worth it to see how excited jim gets when he sees how close they are
